WHAT is Moringa?
Moringa is a fast-growing tree native to tropical and subtropical regions throughout Southeast Asia and Africa. The leaves, seeds, bark, roots, and oil are used for food, traditional herbal medicine, water purification, and more. The root systems can help prevent or slow down soil erosion, and these drought-resistant trees need very little to no supplemental irrigation.
Rich in antioxidants
More nutritious than Kale
Known in ancient cultures as the ‘Tree of Life’, moringa has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb and nutritional supplement in many Southeast Asian cultures.
Moringa is packed with essential amino acids, 27 vitamins, and 46 antioxidants, making it the perfect addition to shakes, smoothies, sauces, and soups.
Apart from being hailed as the next superfood, Moringa is also used in lotions, creams, shampoos, and soaps. Increased awareness of moringa’s health benefits in the US and Europe is driving a growing demand for moringa products.
Within the next 3-5 years, demand for moringa powderis expected to rise by more than 10%. This increasing demand presents a unique opportunity for our farming partners.
One of our goals is to provide those under our care with the tools to provide for themselves. Solemen is working with our Solebuddies (those under our care) to cultivate, plant, harvest, and distribute a diverse range of moringa products in island-based markets while reintroducing Balinese permaculture practices that have been around for centuries.
Rice-farming has been the mainstay for many local families. However, rice crops are high-cost/low-yield ventures, and one bad crop can wipe out a family’s finances in an instant.
Traditional growing practices include the diversification of land use to grow several crops side by side, allowing communities to be less dependent upon only one agricultural resource. Moringa thrives in this type of permaculturegrowing environment.
HOW you can make a difference
